What is Wisdom Tooth Extraction?

A wisdom tooth extraction is a surgical procedure performed to remove one or more of your wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth are the four permanent adult teeth located at the back corners of your mouth on the top and bottom. Wisdom teeth, commonly called “third molars,” usually grow in before the age of 25, and they’re called wisdom teeth because they come through at a mature age.

When we need Extraction?

Wisdom teeth that aren’t in the right position can trap food. This gives cavity-causing bacteria a place to grow.
Wisdom teeth that haven’t come in properly can make it difficult to floss between the wisdom teeth and the molars next to them.
Wisdom teeth that have partially come through can give bacteria a place to enter the gums and create a place for infection. This may also lead to pain, swelling and stiffness in your jaw.
A wisdom tooth that is impacted can possibly form a cyst on or near the impacted tooth.

What are the risks?

Pain and swelling in your gums and tooth socket where the tooth was removed.
Bleeding that won’t stop for about 24 hours.
Difficulty with or pain from opening your jaw.
Slow-healing gums.
Damage to existing dental work, such as crowns or bridges, or to roots of a nearby tooth.

How it will completed?

During wisdom tooth extraction, your dentist

Makes an incision in the gum tissue to expose the tooth and bone
Removes bone that blocks access to the tooth root
Divides the tooth into sections if it’s easier to remove in pieces
Removes the tooth
Cleans the site of the removed tooth of any debris from the tooth or bone
Stitches the wound closed to promote healing, though this isn’t always necessary
Places gauze over the extraction site to control bleeding and to help a blood clot form
